The Philadelphia 76ers are not looking to trade NBA star Joel Embiid.
“We’re still really happy with Joel,” Sixers majority owner Josh Harris told NBA reporter David Alridge of The Athletic this week. “He’s a warrior. I’ve seen this. He’s fought through a lot of injuries. You remember when we started, in his first (two) years, he didn’t play at all. And then, in his third year, he played 30-something games. And then, he fought through all of that, and became the MVP. So, he’s fighting right now, and we’re fighting. And I’m hopeful and optimistic that we’ll get through.
“I want him to get his body right and get on the court. If he gets back on the court, everything’s going to fall into place. I know him as a person, and I know him as an individual, and I know how hard he’s working. I think he’s also super-smart and very in-tune with his body. He has a whole team around him, and we have a whole team around him. He’s getting the absolute best care and best advice. I’m hopeful that he’ll fight through this and make it happen, and that’s what we’re going to plan for right now.”
Embiid has only played in 13 games this season. He’s currently out with a left knee injury.
A two-time scoring champion, Embiid is making $51.4 million this season. In September, he signed a three-year, $192 million extension with the Sixers. The extension kicks in 2026.
Embiid is averaging 24.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.0 blocks this season while shooting 45.2% from the field, 32.7% from beyond the arc and 92.0% from the free-throw line.
Embiid has career averages of 27.8 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.6 blocks. He’s made five All-NBA teams and three All-Defensive teams.
The 30-year-old Embiid won the 2023 MVP Award. However, he’s never advanced past the second round of the playoffs in his career.
