The Pistons are showing interest in Knicks center Mitchell Robinson ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline, per Ian Begley of SNY.tv.
While it’s unknown how available Robinson actually is, Detroit is just one of several teams that’s explored the idea of trade for him.
As Begley noted, if Robinson isn’t given a contract extension before the end of the season, he will become an unrestricted free agent. So that would be a pretty big unknown for any team that might be interested.
All we do seem to know at this point is the Knicks and Pistons are both particularly active in exploring trades, though this is the first we’ve heard of Robinson potentially being on the move.
But other Knicks have had their name on the rumor mill for at least a week, including point guard Kemba Walker, center Nerlens Noel, and guard/forwards Evan Fournier and Alec Burks. The Knicks are also among the teams expressing trade interest in Trail Blazers shooting guard CJ McCollum, as we relayed earlier.
Either way, it appears Robinson has “fans” among those who make decisions about the Pistons’ roster, per Begley.
“Robinson would fit the team’s desire to find players on the same timeline as rookie Cade Cunningham,” Begley wrote. “It’s unknown if Detroit would pursue Robinson via trade or if the club would only consider him if/when he hits free agency.”
Robinson, 23, is 7-foot-0 and averaging 8.4 points and 8.5 rebounds in 48 games through Monday.
