Report: Darryn Peterson prefers Wizards in NBA Draft, hopes to avoid Jazz

Former Kansas guard Darryn Peterson may not control where he’s drafted, but he apparently has some thoughts on where he’d like to end up.

According to Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal, Peterson does not plan to work out for the Jazz and would prefer not to land in Utah — even if he’s not selected first overall by the Wizards.

Afseth reported that Peterson’s camp believes he remains very much in the mix for the No. 1 pick, with Washington continuing to evaluate both Peterson and ex-BYU star AJ Dybantsa at the top of the draft.

If Peterson doesn’t go first, sources told Dallas Hoops Journal that his camp would rather see him land with the Grizzlies at No. 3 than the Jazz at No. 2.

Whether any of that actually matters remains to be seen.

The Jazz have shown in the past that they’re willing to ignore a prospect’s wishes. For instance, Utah selected Ace Bailey with the fifth overall pick in 2025 despite reports that his camp preferred other destinations. Bailey ultimately reported without issue and completed a productive rookie season.

Peterson, meanwhile, remains one of the most highly regarded prospects in the class.

The former Kansas star averaged 20.2 points as a freshman and has drawn comparisons to Anthony Edwards because of his scoring ability and athletic upside.

As for the Wizards, they continue to hold all the cards. And with the June 23 draft just more than a week away, they may ultimately determine whether Peterson gets his wish.
