Former Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith was arrested Monday in Texas on a family violence assault charge, according to TMZ Sports.
Smith was booked into the Hunt County Detention Center on a charge of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence, according to jail records cited by TMZ.
Police told the outlet that an automatic license plate reader flagged the vehicle Smith was driving and alerted officers to an active warrant. Officers then pulled him over and took him into custody.
No bond had been set as of Tuesday morning, per the report.
Smith, 41, played 16 seasons in the NBA, including with the Cavs from 2014-18. He was a key member of Cleveland’s 2016 championship team and later won another title with the Lakers in 2020.
After his NBA career, Smith enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University and joined the school’s golf team. He graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies.
No additional details about the alleged assault were immediately available.
