The Cavaliers are paying like a contender. They just aren’t playing like one at the moment.
Cleveland currently has the most expensive roster in the NBA and is the league’s only team over the second apron. Even so, a major shakeup doesn’t appear to be coming.
According to Jamal Collier of ESPN, there has been “no indication” the Cavs are preparing for significant roster changes ahead of the February 5 trade deadline.
That’s notable given the results. The Cavs sit at 20-17 (entering Tuesday) and would land in the Play-In Tournament if the season ended today. The core of Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Jarrett Allen has now spent three seasons together without getting past the second round.
Mitchell has delivered. The supporting cast, according to league observers, has been more uneven. That’s where the internal tension lies. Cleveland knows something may need to change if this continues, but the financial reality complicates everything.
As Zach Kram of ESPN noted, being over the second apron severely limits flexibility. So the Cavs’ best path forward may simply be health. The team is banking on the return of Max Strus and Larry Nance Jr., along with more consistent play from a group that still carries expectations.
If that doesn’t stabilize things, tougher decisions could wait until the offseason.
