RJ Barrett would be perfectly happy if Toronto were his final NBA stop. Whether the Raptors feel the same way remains to be seen.
Barrett is entering the final season of his contract, worth about $29.6 million, and told reporters at Media Day that there haven’t been substantive talks about an extension. Apparently, he isn’t sweating it.
“I have a great agent,” Barrett said, via Sportsnet. “They’re still paying me a lot of money. I’m good.”
Hard to argue with that. Barrett is coming off perhaps his best all-around season, averaging 19.3 points while shooting 49.1 percent from the field. He’s also playing for his hometown team and made no secret about wanting to keep it that way. But he understands the business.
“You’re always auditioning every time you step on the floor,” Barrett said. “I hope to be here for the rest of my career.”
Toronto doesn’t have to make that decision today. Barrett doesn’t have to obsess over it today, either. So he’ll play. And audition. Even if he’d prefer the job permanently.
