Rockets to Sign Willie Cauley-Stein to 10-Day Deal

The Rockets intend to sign free agent center Willie Cauley-Stein to a 10-day contract, per Shams Charania and Kelly Iko of The Athletic.Willie Cauley-Stein

Cauley-Stein, 29, is 7-foot-0 and has not played in the NBA this season after appearing in just 22 last year. He has been playing instead with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the G League.

He actually signed with the Rockets for training camp, but was waived just before the start of the regular season. The Vipers are the Rockets’ affiliate, so he’s undoubtedly stayed on their radar.

Cauley-Stein signed a multiyear deal with the Mavericks in December 2021, only to be waived a month later, appearing in a total of 20 games in 2021-22. He signed a 10-day contract with the 76ers in February but was let go in March.

The No. 6 overall pick in 2015, he has also spent time with the Kings and Warriors, compiling career averages of 8.7 points and 5.9 rebounds. He has spent a total of nine seasons in the NBA with four teams, making the Rockets his fifth.

The Rockets (13-47) are clearly OK with bringing in players on a trial basis, given that they have the league’s worst record and are headed for the NBA Draft lottery.
