Spurs Signing Stanley Johnson After Waiving Alize Johnson

The Spurs are signing small forward Stanley Johnson to a one-year contract, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.Stanley Johnson

The move follows a team announcement earlier in the day that it had waived forward Alize Johnson.

Stanley Johnson, 26, is 6-foot-6 and was acquired by the Jazz from the Lakers before the season, along with guard/forward Talen Horton-Tucker, in exchange for guard Patrick Beverley. The Jazz waived him shortly thereafter.

He was expected to join the Heat’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, earlier this week.

The No. 8 overall pick by the Pistons in 2015, Stanley Johnson averaged 6.7 points and 3.2 rebounds. He signed a total of four 10-day contracts in 2021-22 — one with the Bulls, followed by three with the Lakers. He eventually signed a standard deal with LA in late January.

Along with the Lakers, Bulls and Pistons, Stanley Johnson has spent time with the Pelicans and Raptors.

Alize Johnson, 26, is 6-7 and signed with the Spurs on Nov. 29. He first appeared in four preseason games with the Spurs before being waived in mid-October, then joined the Austin Spurs, San Antonio’s affiliate in the G League.

Alize Johnson undoubtedly has gained his fair share of experience, spending time with the Bulls, Wizards and Pelicans last season alone, the latter two on 10-day contracts (he signed two of those in New Orleans).

Along with the aforementioned, he has also spent time with the Pacers and Nets since entering the league in 2018. Last season, he appeared in 23 games overall, averaging around 2.0 points and 3.0 rebounds.

With Austin, he averaged 22.2 points and 10.7 rebounds while shooting a sizzling 60 percent from the field. He very well could be headed back to Austin should another NBA opportunity not present itself first.
