Spurs to Waive Noah Vonleh

The Spurs will be waiving forward/center Noah Vonleh following their trade with the Celtics, per multiple reports, including Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News.Noah Vonleh

As first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Spurs are acquiring Vonleh in exchange for cash. Brian Robb of MassLive added that a pick may also go to Boston, as we relayed here.

Vonleh’s contract is set to become guaranteed this weekend, likely leading to the decision to waive him.

Along with that, the Spurs are opting to waive center Gorgui Dieng, a popular figure in the locker room, per Orsborn. Both the Spurs and Celtics will create a roster spot with the deal.

Vonleh, 27, is 6-foot-10 and has appeared in 23 games with the Celtics this season after signing a one-year deal in September. The Spurs would have become his ninth team since entering the NBA in 2014 as the No. 9 overall draft pick by Charlotte.

He spent three of those seasons with the Trail Blazers. He has also spent time with the Knicks, Timberwolves, Bulls, Nuggets and Nets. Vonleh carries career averages of 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Dieng, 32, has appeared in just 13 games this season, averaging right around 11 minutes a night. He is averaging 4.1 points and 3.2 rebounds.

Along with the Spurs, Dieng has spent time with the Hawks, Grizzlies and Timberwolves.
