Spurs Viewed as Suitor for Suns’ Chris Paul

Those around the NBA view the Spurs as a potential landing spot for veteran point guard Chris Paul should he be waived by the Suns, per Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer.Chris Paul

Paul and the Suns are reportedly trying to work out an arrangement that will determine his future in Phoenix. Earlier this week, Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report/TNT reported that the Suns intend to waive Paul before his $30.8 million contract becomes fully guaranteed on July 29.

If the Suns were to release Paul before that date, they would still be on the hook for half of his salary.

They were also said to be seeking a trade centered on Paul, though most opposing teams aren’t about to go that route — not if they know the Suns are considering waiving him. In that event, another team could simply sign him as a free agent without surrendering any assets.

As for the Spurs, there’s a sense that they will try to surround incoming French center Victor Wembanyama with veteran talent. San Antonio will select Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and by all accounts, want to make his transition to the league go as smoothly as possible.

Paul, 38, is nearly 20 years older than Wembanyama and is the type of floor leader who could undoubtedly help in the area of acting as a coach on the court.

Along with the Spurs, Paul has been linked to both the Clippers and Lakers, as we relayed here. He still owns a home in Los Angeles. Reports also suggest he could he return to the Suns, albeit at a cheaper rate.

As for Phoenix, one report suggested that they could make a run at 76ers guard James Harden, who is also expected to enter free agency later this month.
