The Spurs have waived center Khem Birch, the team announced in a press release.
Birch, 31, is 6-foot-9 and was acquired from the Raptors as part of the Jakob Poeltl trade with the Raptors in February. But he was sidelined by a right knee issue and never appeared in a game for San Antonio.
He appears to be the victim of the fact the Spurs had 16 guaranteed contracts heading into the season and needed to get rid of one. (Teams are allowed just 15.)
Birch appeared in 20 games with the Raptors last season, averaging 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds. He went undrafted out of UNLV in 2014 and along with the Raptors, has spent time with the Magic.
The Spurs now have 18 players on the roster, with two of the three two-way slots filled.
