Stephen Curry: Hopefully, LeBron joining Warriors will be a reality soon

Stephen Curry isn’t trying to rush LeBron James. He’d just like to be his teammate.

Speaking ahead of this week’s American Century Championship golf tournament, Curry acknowledged he’s stayed in touch with James as the four-time NBA champion weighs the biggest free-agent decision of his career.

“We’ve obviously talked,” Curry said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “He deserves all the patience and space to figure out what he wants to do as his career winds down. We all understand and appreciate that.”

Then came the line that figures to grab the attention of Warriors fans everywhere.

“I would love to play with him,” Curry said, “and hopefully that will be a reality soon.”

Curry also joked that he’s just as interested in seeing James’ golf game as his basketball decision.

“I’d say more so I’m interested to play golf with LeBron,” Curry said. “We’ll handle the basketball stuff.”

Golden State remains one of the teams believed to be in the mix for James, along with the Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers, Timberwolves and Nuggets.

ESPN’s Shams Charania has reported that those six teams all believe they have a legitimate shot, with Cleveland, Miami and Philadelphia widely viewed as the current frontrunners.

The Warriors have also been careful to preserve flexibility this offseason, fueling continued speculation that they’re waiting to see what James ultimately decides before making their next major move.

Whether that leads to Curry and James finally sharing an NBA backcourt remains to be seen.

One thing is clear, though: Curry isn’t hiding the fact he’d welcome it.
