Stephen Curry on Warriors extension: ‘We’ll figure that out at the right time’

Stephen Curry doesn’t know when he’ll sign another contract with the Warriors.

He sounds considerably more certain about where he’ll finish his career.

“There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen,” Curry told Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area on Monday.

Curry officially became eligible for an extension over the weekend and can sign a two-year deal worth up to $136.7 million.

But after Golden State won just 37 games last season, there’s been some natural speculation about whether Curry might eventually look elsewhere for one final shot at another championship. He doesn’t sound interested.

“The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season,” Curry said.

That’s probably the key here. Curry doesn’t need to rush. He’s under contract for $62.6 million this season and remains eligible for an extension through June 30.

If he waits until free agency next summer, he could sign for as many as three years.

The Warriors don’t appear particularly concerned, either. Co-owner Joe Lacob recently said he “can’t imagine a scenario” in which Curry leaves and that Golden State is prepared to give him whatever contract he wants, up to the maximum.

So this isn’t exactly shaping up as a contract standoff. It’s more about timing.

Curry, 38, averaged 26.6 points and shot 39.3 percent on 3-pointers last season despite a knee issue limiting him to 43 games. Golden State also lost Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody to season-ending injuries, contributing to a season in which very little went according to plan.

“Hopefully we can be healthy and just have a chance to show what we’re capable of,” Curry said.

Perhaps Curry wants to see some of that, too, before deciding exactly what his next contract should look like.

But as for another uniform? He doesn’t seem to be considering one.

“The goal stays the same,” Curry said. “Extension stuff, we’ll figure that out at the right time.”
