Suns Could Revisit Pursuit of Kyrie Irving in Offseason

It’s no secret the Suns had an interest in Mavericks point guard Kyrie Irving before he was traded by the Nets to the Mavericks.Kyrie Irving

And even after landing star forward Kevin Durant, the Suns very well could end up pursuing Irving again. Or perhaps especially after landing Durant in a separate trade with the Nets.

Irving will be a free agent at the end of the season, in lieu of a contract extension from the Mavs. So if he doesn’t want to return to Dallas, rejoining Durant in Phoenix isn’t out of the question, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

“If you think this is over, it ain’t over,” Windhorst said on Get Up, via RealGM. “Kyrie really was interested in being in Phoenix, so just start thinking about that.”

Granted, there is still plenty of regular season left, as well as the playoffs. So much of what Irving does next will undoubtedly be determined on how things go with the Mavs — and how they go with Durant and the Suns.

Either way, given that the Suns will be over the salary cap in 2023, they would have to receive cooperation from the Mavs to make a deal for Irving. But considering their blockbuster move for Durant ahead of Thursday’s deadline, we can see that just about anything is possible in the NBA these days.

Plus, Chris Paul turns 38-years old in May, leading many to believe he could be on the way out.

“Phoenix has explored a change at point guard from Chris Paul, who is only partially guaranteed next season at $15 million and the final season is a team option,” RealGM noted.
