Thunder’s cost-cutting moves reportedly about budget, not second apron

The Thunder won the NBA championship in 2025 and contended again last season. Keeping that championship-level roster together is another matter.

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, Oklahoma City’s decisions to move Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe this offseason weren’t primarily about avoiding second-apron restrictions. Instead, ownership is operating within a budget in one of the NBA’s smallest markets, making the moves largely financial.

That explanation lines up with what Thunder general manager Sam Presti said earlier this month.

As Hoops Wire noted last week, Presti flatly described the Dort trade as a “financial decision.” He indicated that money saved this summer, along with savings from staying out of the luxury tax in previous years and new revenue streams, is expected to be redirected toward maintaining a contender in the future.

There was still a basketball cost. Dort was one of Oklahoma City’s top perimeter defenders, while Wiggins and Joe provided valuable depth and shooting. Moving all three makes the defending champions a little thinner entering next season.

It also may be a preview of the decisions ahead. The Thunder have assembled one of the NBA’s deepest young cores, but keeping it intact will become increasingly expensive. Oklahoma City appears to be choosing where and when to spend now, knowing larger bills are coming.

Meanwhile, Denver’s decision to match the Thunder’s offer sheet for restricted free agent Spencer Jones leaves Oklahoma City with an open roster spot.

Justin Martinez of The Oklahoman suggested the Thunder could carry that opening into the season or eventually promote a two-way player. Second-round pick Otega Oweh and recently waived guard Payton Sandfort are among the possibilities.

Either way, for Oklahoma City, the challenge has changed. Building a championship roster was difficult enough. Now the Thunder have to figure out how to afford one.
