Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards to undergo knee procedure, miss up to two months

One night after scoring 47 points against the Cavaliers, Anthony Edwards is facing an extended absence.

The Timberwolves star will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee and miss up to two months, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Minnesota hopes addressing the issue now will allow Edwards to return sometime in December fully ready to play, per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. That timeline will depend on how he recovers from the procedure.

It’s a significant setback for a team that won its first three games before Monday’s 127-125 overtime loss in Cleveland.

Edwards had been listed as questionable for that game because of right knee injury maintenance. He played and delivered a performance that hardly suggested a lengthy absence was coming, shooting 19-of-33 from the field and repeatedly answering Cleveland’s comeback attempts.

Now the Wolves will have to keep their promising start going without their leading offensive threat. LaMelo Ball figures to shoulder more of the scoring and playmaking responsibilities, while coach Chris Finch looks for additional production throughout the rotation.

Minnesota added Ball to give Edwards another dynamic creator alongside him. For the next several weeks, the Wolves will need that addition to help them navigate life without him.

The hope is that dealing with the knee now gives Edwards a healthier runway for the rest of the season. Getting through the stretch before his return becomes Minnesota’s immediate challenge.
