Timberwolves’ two-year deal with Jonathan Kuminga now official

Jonathan Kuminga is officially a member of the Timberwolves, as Minnesota finalized its two-year, $12.4 million contract with the former Warriors and Hawks forward, according to the NBA transaction log.

The deal, originally agreed to in late August, includes a player option for the second season.

The Wolves couldn’t immediately complete the signing because they first needed to create some financial breathing room.

They did that by trading Josh Green to the Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar, then waiving and stretching Konchar’s contract. Now Kuminga is in the fold.

The 23-year-old averaged 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in 36 games between the Warriors and Hawks last season after Atlanta acquired him at the February trade deadline.

Minnesota president Tim Connelly, Anthony Edwards and co-owner Alex Rodriguez were all reportedly involved in recruiting Kuminga, who accepted less money to join the Timberwolves.

It’s essentially a prove-it arrangement. Kuminga gets a chance to carve out a significant role on a contender and, with that player option, potentially return to the market next summer.

The Wolves get an athletic former lottery pick without making much of a long-term commitment. Now it’s official.
