Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards will miss tonight’s game against Utah after being ejected in Thursday’s loss to the Lakers. Edwards picked up two technical fouls, pushing his season total to 16—an automatic one-game suspension unless the league rescinds one of them.
Edwards’ first technical came at the end of the first quarter when he and Jarred Vanderbilt exchanged shoves, resulting in double techs. His second came in the third quarter after complaining about a no-call. “[Edwards] was issued his second unsportsmanlike technical foul for directing profanity towards a game official,” crew chief James Williams explained via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.
According to ESPN Research, Edwards is the first player since DeMarcus Cousins (2016-17) to reach 16 technicals before March. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch believes his star guard must keep his emotions in check. “He’s got to be better,” Finch said. “They’re going to miss some calls from time to time for sure, so he’s got to be better.”
Edwards also threw the ball into the stands after his ejection, which could result in another fine. He has already accumulated $285,000 in fines across five separate infractions this season, per The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.
Moving forward, Edwards will be suspended for every two additional technical fouls he receives. Veteran guard Mike Conley believes Edwards isn’t alone in his emotional reactions. “We’ve got a lot of guys who get emotional when things don’t go the right way, individually. And that can hurt our team as a whole,” Conley said. “We have to be better. Ant has to be better. He knows that.”
