Report: Trae Young Strongly Prefers To Remain With Hawks

For now, Trae Young isn’t looking for the exit ramp.Trae Young, Hawks, NBA

NBA insider Chris Haynes appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and said Atlanta’s star guard is embracing the Hawks’ rebuild and wants to be part of whatever comes next.

“(Young) said he’s in a good spot,” Haynes told Patrick. “He said he knew there was going to be speculation once the Hawks went to a younger core. Had the number one pick, he knew there was going to be speculation about his future. He said he bought in, he took the number one pick. Brought him to his hometown in Oklahoma to show him around and spend some time with him right after he was drafted to get him engaged.

“So, he’s somebody who, again, just told me a week, a week-and-a-half ago, that he’s down with the process. He wants to see this Atlanta Hawks squad turn the corner and he wants to be a pivotal part in that.”

So, despite trade rumors that seem to pop up every 48 hours, Young sounds like someone trying to steer the ship, not abandon it.

Multiple NBA sources have also told Hoops Wire that it’s clear Young is taking on a leadership role behind the scenes.

Financially, he’s got two years left on his current deal — including a $45.9 million salary next season, then a $48.9 million player option in 2026-27. He’s also eligible for a four-year extension this summer, or five years if he declines the option and makes All-NBA. That could put him into super max territory, with a deal starting at 35% of the salary cap.

Bottom line: Young says he’s locked in. But around the NBA, actions — and extensions –speak louder than words.
