The Portland Trail Blazers have announced a multiyear contract extension for general manager Joe Cronin, confirming earlier reports in a press release.
“Joe has demonstrated leadership and vision during his time as General Manager, and I’m excited to see him continue building the foundation for a long-term, winning team,” Blazers chair Jody Allen said. “We are all thrilled with the team’s forward momentum and excited for the future of Trail Blazers basketball.”
Cronin, who joined the Blazers as a basketball operations intern in 2006, has played a pivotal role in reshaping the team. He was promoted to assistant general manager in 2021 and took over as interim GM in December of that year after Neil Olshey‘s departure.
In May 2022, Cronin was named permanent GM following the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season. As relayed by ESPN’s Shams Charania, Cronin signed a four-year contract in May 2022, and with this extension, his deal is now expected to run through at least 2028.
Under Cronin’s leadership, the Blazers have shown improvement, despite their ongoing presence in the NBA lottery. This season, Portland has already won 14 more games (35) than last year, with three games remaining on the schedule. Since January 19, the Blazers have posted a 22-16 record, driven by a robust defensive effort.
Cronin’s tenure as GM has included key trades and draft picks that have shaped the Blazers’ roster. Notably, he orchestrated the 2023 trade that sent Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks, acquiring Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara, and multiple draft assets in return.
He also traded for Deni Avdija, who has played a pivotal role in the team’s recent success. Additionally, Cronin has added talent through the draft, selecting Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, and Donovan Clingan in the past three lotteries.
