Blazers under scrutiny as rivals spend big on coaches, front offices

The Trail Blazers are taking a different path. Around the NBA, others are spending big.

While teams like the Bucks and Mavericks have made aggressive, high-cost moves this offseason, Portland continues to operate with a more cautious approach, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.

Milwaukee recently hired Taylor Jenkins to a deal worth well north of $10 million annually, while Dallas made a splash by landing Masai Ujiri to run basketball operations.

Those moves send a message. They signal urgency. Investment. A willingness to pay for winning.

The Blazers, meanwhile, are still searching for a head coach, with no clear timeline in place.

League sources told The Athletic that Portland’s candidate pool could approach 20 names, with new owner Tom Dundon and the front office both involved in the process.

There is also ongoing speculation about how much the Blazers are willing to spend. Reports have suggested a potential salary range on the low end compared to the rest of the league.

That part matters, because in today’s NBA, money often reflects intent.

And right now, Portland’s direction is still coming into focus.
