Tyler Herro is coming home, but he isn’t coming home to be Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Milwaukee native arrived from Miami as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Antetokounmpo to the Heat, making Herro one of the faces of a very different Bucks team. Just don’t call him Giannis’ replacement.
“I don’t think we’re replacing Giannis,” Herro said at Media Day, via Brew Hoop. “Obviously, he’s the greatest Buck that’s played for the organization, but we’re not replacing him.”
Probably wise. Replacing a two-time MVP who delivered the franchise its first championship in 50 years isn’t exactly a reasonable first-day assignment. Herro would rather look forward.
“It’s a new era,” he said. “Building as a team, building as an organization, and trying to get back to the mountaintop.”
Herro grew up in the Milwaukee area and said he’s enjoyed seeing how much the city has changed since he left. The basketball landscape has changed considerably, too.
For more than a decade, Giannis was Milwaukee basketball. Now he’s in Miami. Herro isn’t pretending to be the next Giannis. The Bucks need him to help them figure out what comes next.
