Warriors, Klay Thompson Not Near Contract Extension

The Warriors and shooting guard Klay Thompson have yet to exchange any offers on a potential contract extension, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic.Klay Thompson drives by D'Angelo Russell

Thompson, 33, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season without an extension. That said, there doesn’t appear to be any urgency from either Golden State or Thompson on getting a deal done now.

After overcoming a torn Achilles and ACL surgery, Thompson appeared in 69 games and averaged 21.9 points on 41 percent 3-point shooting last season. But he struggled against in the Warriors’ second-round playoff loss to the Lakers, particularly defensively, against LA’s younger guards.

That said, both he and the Warriors have expressed a desire to stay together beyond this season.

“He’s owed $43.1 million this season. An alternate path to duck under the second apron would’ve been to let Thompson’s contract expire and allow him to walk,” Slater wrote. “But they’ve been firm in their intent to eventually extend him, and Thompson has maintained a desire to return.”
