Warriors still trying to find one more run with Stephen Curry

The Warriors still have Stephen Curry. That’s the good news.

The harder part is figuring out whether they still have enough around him to make another serious run.

Golden State went 37-45 last season and entered the summer looking for a major upgrade. It explored possibilities involving Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James, but neither materialized. Instead, the Warriors largely opted for continuity and flexibility.

Draymond Green, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, Gary Payton II and De’Anthony Melton are back. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg is expected to take on a meaningful role right away. Jimmy Butler’s eventual return from a torn ACL could change the outlook considerably.

That may be the biggest variable. As ESPN’s season preview noted, the Warriors will have a much clearer picture by the February trade deadline. If Butler looks like himself again, Golden State could convince itself that one more move is enough.

If not, the Warriors may have to decide whether to use their future flexibility on a bigger swing.

Brandin Podziemski also looms as an important piece. He’s extension-eligible and could become a restricted free agent next summer if no deal is reached.

So the Warriors aren’t rebuilding. They’re not exactly all-in, either. They’re somewhere in between, hoping Curry can keep the window open long enough for the rest of the roster to catch up.

That’s a tricky place to live in the NBA. But when you still have Steph, you keep looking for another run.
