Wizards’ Alex Sarr limited to begin camp, still expected ready for opener

Alex Sarr won’t be a full participant when Wizards training camp opens next week, but the team still expects him to be ready when the games count.

General manager Will Dawkins told reporters Thursday that Sarr will participate on a limited basis as he completes his recovery from right foot surgery, per Josh Robbins of The Athletic.

Washington’s regular-season opener is Oct. 21, and Dawkins said Sarr remains on track to play.

The former No. 2 overall pick underwent surgery in June after fracturing his foot during an offseason workout. It was the latest physical setback for Sarr, who appeared in only 48 games last season because of toe, adductor, hamstring, calf and ankle injuries.

He was productive when available, averaging 16.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 blocks in 27.2 minutes.

Sarr returns to a frontcourt that looks considerably different. The Wizards added Anthony Davis and Deandre Ayton as they attempt to return to the playoffs after three consecutive seasons with no more than 18 victories.

Dawkins called Davis a starting-level center and described Ayton as perhaps the NBA’s best backup. Assuming Sarr gets healthy, Washington should have no shortage of size. Figuring out how all three fit together will be the more interesting part.
