The Washington Wizards intend to re-sign power forward Anthony Gill, according to Tim Bontemps of ESPN.
Gill, 31, is 6-foot-7 and has been an underrated hustle player off the bench, appearing in 50 games last season and averaging 3.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.7 assists and shooting 46.9% from the field. He has spent all four of his NBA seasons with the Wizards.
Several European teams were said to be interested in Gill, but his preference was to stay in the U.S. and NBA.
While no details have been offered on Gill’s deal, his signing means Washington will have 19 players on their training camp roster, including 17 with standard contracts. Translation: More moves are ahead.
The Wizards have added several veterans to the roster this offseason as they aim for their first 50-win season since 1979. That list includes center Jonas Valanciunas (formerly of the New Orleans Pelicans), guard Malcolm Brogdon (Portland Trail Blazers) and forward Saddiq Bey (Atlanta Hawks).
Along with all that, they selected big man Alex Sarr with the No. 2 overall draft pick. They also landed guard Carlton Carrington at No. 14 and forward Kyshawn George at No. 24.
They also hired former interim coach Brian Keefe to the job on a full-time basis.
Washington’s last Finals appearance came in 1979, when the team nickname was the Bullets. The lone title in franchise history came the previous season. They have not won a playoff series since beating the Atlanta Hawks in seven games in the first round in 2017.
