Wizards viewed as possible wildcard in LeBron James sweepstakes

The Wizards may not be a team commonly linked to LeBron James, but according to veteran NBA insider Brandon Robinson, some around the league view Washington as a potential wildcard if James decides to leave the Lakers.

One reason? Anthony Davis.

League sources have long maintained that Davis and James remain extremely close, and Robinson reports that a possible reunion could become part of Washington’s recruiting pitch if the opportunity ever presents itself.

At the same time, Davis reportedly has not fully committed publicly to a long-term future with the Wizards following his arrival from Los Angeles.

That has only increased the urgency for Washington’s front office to continue building a roster capable of competing in the Eastern Conference.

According to Robinson, Trae Young has also been active behind the scenes encouraging Davis to embrace the organization’s direction.

Sources close to Young told Robinson the star guard believes the Wizards already have a solid foundation in place and could take a major leap with another marquee addition.

If Washington somehow managed to assemble a core built around James, Davis and Young, it would immediately become one of the NBA’s biggest offseason storylines and potentially alter the balance of power in the East.

The Wizards currently hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and continue operating under general manager Will Dawkins and Monumental Basketball president Michael Winger.

That said, James still appears most closely tied to the Lakers, especially with Luka Doncic‘s presence there.

But as Robinson noted, much could depend on whether the Lakers can build a legitimate title contender around James and Doncic moving forward.
