Wizards say it’s finally time to ‘change the narrative’

The Wizards know what everyone thinks about them. They’ve provided plenty of evidence.

Washington has won just 50 games over the past three seasons, finishing with no more than 18 victories in any of them. This year’s group believes that needs to end.

“It’s time to change the narrative,” guard Bub Carrington said as training camp opened, according to The Washington Post.

At least this time, Washington has some legitimate reasons for optimism.

The Wizards have added Anthony Davis and Trae Young to a roster that also features No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa, Deandre Ayton and Khris Middleton.

That’s considerably different from another season built almost entirely around development and draft position. Nobody is promising a championship parade. But losing 60-plus games isn’t supposed to be part of the plan anymore, either.

Davis gives Washington a defensive anchor. Young gives it an established offensive engine. Dybantsa gives the Wizards perhaps their most important young building block in years. Now they have to make all of it work.

Washington has spent the past few seasons asking fans for patience. This team sounds ready to ask for something else, as in, expectations.
