The Boston Celtics have waived guard JD Davison, the team announced via social media, parting ways with the 2024-25 G League MVP despite a strong run with their affiliate.

Boston had picked up Davison’s team option for 2025-26 in late June, though the deal was fully non-guaranteed. By cutting ties now, the Celtics avoid the $2.27 million cap hit and, per The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn, slide back under the second tax apron. That move gives Boston more flexibility in trade talks as the offseason rolls on.

A second-round pick (No. 53) in 2022 out of Alabama, Davison spent most of his time in Boston on a two-way contract before converting to a multiyear standard deal near the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

He appeared in just 36 total NBA games across three seasons, logging 198 minutes and averaging 1.6 points and 1.1 assists.

But in the G League, he made a real name for himself. He averaged 25.6 points, 7.7 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 45 combined games with Maine last season, shooting nearly 48 percent from the field.

Still, Boston’s championship window and bloated payroll left little room for development projects. With Davison gone, the Celtics now have 15 players on standard contracts.
