Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen is dealing with a fracture in his left ring finger, but for now, the plan is for him to keep playing through it.
As relayed by Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, Allen injured the finger during pregame warmups Wednesday in Boston, feeling discomfort but opting to play anyway in the Cavs’ loss to the Celtics.
X-rays on Thursday confirmed a non-displaced fracture of the distal phalanx — essentially a break near the fingertip that can cause swelling, bruising, and pain.
Team doctors will monitor Allen’s progress closely, with his finger being re-examined regularly as the Cavs manage pain and swelling.
Surgery isn’t currently on the table, but that could change if the injury worsens. Allen is listed as questionable for Friday’s home game against Toronto.
The timing isn’t ideal. Cleveland is already missing Darius Garland (toe) and Max Strus (foot), leaving the frontcourt to shoulder more of the load. If Allen needs time off, the Cavs could turn to Dean Wade, Larry Nance Jr., or Thomas Bryant for extra minutes.
Allen, 27, is averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds through the first five games. He appeared in all 82 games and every playoff game last season.
