The Lakers are continuing to build out their basketball operations department.

Los Angeles announced Wednesday that former Virginia head coach Tony Bennett has been hired as an NBA draft advisor, adding another experienced voice to the front office led by Rob Pelinka.

“We’re thrilled and honored to welcome Tony as an advisor,” Pelinka said in a team statement.

He praised Bennett’s track record of building culture and developing high-IQ players, calling him a valuable resource for the team’s scouts and draft department.

Bennett’s résumé is extensive. He spent 15 seasons at Virginia, compiling a 364-136 record and leading the Cavaliers to the 2019 national championship. That title team featured several future NBA players, including De’Andre Hunter, Ty Jerome, and Jay Huff.

Bennett was named Naismith College Coach of the Year twice and is widely respected for his emphasis on defense, discipline, and player development.

The move fits a broader vision. New controlling owner Mark Walter has made it clear he wants a deeper, more collaborative front office modeled after the Dodgers’ structure. Bennett is expected to be one of several additions in the coming months.

The timing makes sense. The Lakers currently project to hold their own first-round pick in the 2026 draft, slotted in the early 20s. Having an experienced evaluator in place could matter more than ever.
