NBA expansion talk is heating up again, and Las Vegas is right in the middle of it.
Actually, it’s more than that. One league owner put it to Hoops Wire this way when asked about expansion overall: “No brainer. It’s gonna happen.”
That includes Vegas.
League owners are expected to revisit expansion during upcoming Board of Governors meetings, with the possibility of a formal step toward bids for two new franchises.
The expectation around the league remains that Las Vegas and Seattle are the leading candidates, targeting a 2028-29 debut.
So why Vegas, and why now? Start with this: The NBA has already been treating Las Vegas like an unofficial home base.
Summer League has evolved into a massive annual event, drawing front offices, players, media and fans from across the league. It’s no longer just a showcase for rookies. It’s a full-blown NBA gathering.
As you know, Vegas has also hosted the championship rounds of the NBA Cup, further cementing its place on the league calendar.
Then there’s the bigger picture. Las Vegas has turned into one of the fastest-growing sports cities in North America.
The Raiders arrived in 2020. The Golden Knights began play in 2017. The WNBA’s Aces relocated in 2018. And the Athletics are on the way.
The infrastructure is there. The market is there. The momentum is obvious. Now add in the money.
Expansion fees are projected to land somewhere between $7 billion and $10 billion per team, with that revenue going directly to the league’s current owners. If two teams enter at those numbers, it could mean roughly $500 million per owner.
That alone may push things across the finish line.
So Las Vegas isn’t just a possibility anymore. It’s part of a much bigger shift across the NBA, one that also includes a likely return to Seattle and the SuperSonics.
And if the tone around the league is any indication, that shift may be coming sooner than later.
