Cavs’ Evan Mobley trending in right direction even as questions linger

This isn’t so much concern as it is conversation.

When it comes to Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley, it’s a conversation that seems to follow him a little more than most.

Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley recently took a look at where things stand, suggesting the Cavs will need Mobley at his very best if this season is going where they hope.

That part isn’t exactly groundbreaking. Everyone knows it. Inside the building and out. It’s also worth noting what’s actually happening right now.

Mobley’s overall numbers are steady — 18.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, strong efficiency. Not a leap, maybe, but hardly a step back.

Lately, there’s been more.

Over his last 10 games, Mobley is averaging 21.1 points and 10.2 rebounds while shooting 61 percent from the field. He’s been more assertive offensively. More comfortable. More willing to go get it.

That shouldn’t be ignored.

There’s also the reality of a new-look offense with James Harden now in the mix alongside Donovan Mitchell. That’s an adjustment for everyone, not just Mobley. In a lot of ways, both he and Jarrett Allen have started to look more natural within it as time has gone on.

So yes, the expectations are high. They should be.

Mobley’s ceiling remains as intriguing as just about any other big man’s in the league. You hear the comparisons. You hear the projections. You understand why.

The Cavs don’t necessarily need something completely different from him. They just need more of what he’s already starting to show.

Cleveland is sitting fourth in the East, with bigger goals than just getting through the second round. That part hasn’t changed.

If Mobley keeps trending the way he has lately, the bigger picture may take care of itself.
