Not long after the Celtics made a run to the Finals, the whole world started talking about them possibly landing Nets superstar Kevin Durant in a trade.
Those reported scenarios involved Celtics star Jaylen Brown. Some of them also included veteran guard Marcus Smart.
But Smart told Jared Weiss of The Athletic that he felt the entire time as if there wasn’t a whole lot of truth to them.
“For someone who’s always talked about in trade talks, I didn’t really pay too much mind to that. Until it actually happens, I don’t believe it,” Smart said, via Weiss. “We can sit here and say this person said this, but we don’t even know who said it. It’s like a telephone game. By the time it gets back to you, you don’t know what changed and who said what. Until it actually happens, I try to pay trade rumors no mind.”
Smart was right — as the trade never happened. Durant is staying with the Nets. Smart and Brown are back with the Celtics.
Now, the plan is merely for Boston to try to repeat as Eastern Conference champs, and perhaps take it a step further with the likes of Brown, Smart, Jayson Tatum and newcomer Malcolm Brogdon.
“I am glad to be able to say we have the team still together,” Smart said, via Weiss. “We made a run and we left a little bit on the table. We want to run it back.”
