Cavs’ Jim Chones: ‘It is a transition,’ as longtime radio analyst steps away

For the Cavaliers, it’s the end of an era.

Longtime radio analyst Jim Chones announced he will step away from his role following the season, bringing to a close nearly two decades on the mic and an even longer run with the franchise overall.

“It is a transition,” Chones said during an appearance on WTAM 1100. “I’ll be doing other things, you know, in partnership with the Cavs and other parts and other relationships.”

Chones has served as the team’s radio analyst since 2007 and was previously a TV color commentator for 11 seasons. His voice became a steady presence during some of the most memorable moments in franchise history, including LeBron James’ return, four straight Finals appearances and the 2016 championship.

His connection to the organization goes back even further. Chones played for Cleveland from 1974-79 before joining the Lakers, where he helped win a title in 1980.

Now, he’s ready for something new.

“What I’ve learned over the years is that basketball has changed,” Chones said. “Basketball is a social network. There’s a lot of other things that contribute … I want to be in partnership with the Cavs and develop other projects and try to be a part of that.”

So while Chones is stepping away from the headset, he’s not stepping away from the team. Just shifting roles.

And for those who have followed the Cavs over the years, it won’t quite sound the same without him.
