San Diego to honor Bill Walton with special college hoops event

A night that feels very Bill Walton is coming to San Diego.

Namely, a doubleheader featuring San Diego State, UC-San Diego and the University of San Diego is set for Nov. 7 at Pechanga Arena as part of the inaugural Bill Walton Classic.

The event will open with a women’s game between UC San Diego and San Diego, followed by a men’s matchup featuring San Diego State against an opponent still to be announced.

It is about more than basketball.

It is about honoring Walton, the Hall of Famer, San Diego icon and one of the sport’s most unforgettable voices. Walton passed away in 2024 at age 71 after a battle with cancer.

Organizers say the goal is simple: Bring the city together. Celebrate the game. Do it in a way Walton would appreciate.

If you knew Walton, that means loud, joyful and a little bit different.

He starred at UCLA, won an NBA title with the Trail Blazers in 1977 and another with the Celtics in 1986. He later became an Emmy-winning broadcaster known for turning games into experiences.

San Diego never stopped being home.

The city recently honored him by naming a street near Helix High School after him. Now comes a night that figures to feel the same way Walton lived his life. Big. Bright. Full of energy.

Tickets go on sale Friday.
