NBA Notes: Magic, Sean Sweeney, Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Team Canada

Magic

The Magic have officially named Sean Sweeney as their new head coach.

Orlando announced the hiring Monday after reports surfaced last week that the longtime Spurs assistant had emerged as the organization’s top choice.

Sweeney will remain with San Antonio through the NBA Finals before making the move.

“Sean brings a tremendous work ethic and a high degree of intensity that set the tone for everything he does,” president Jeff Weltman said in a statement.

Sweeney arrives after helping oversee a dramatic defensive turnaround in San Antonio. The Spurs climbed from 25th in defensive rating a year ago to third this season, helping fuel their run to the Finals.

The Magic considered several candidates, including Jeff Van Gundy and Bulls coach Billy Donovan, but ultimately chose Sweeney, who will be a first-time NBA head coach.

Thunder

The Thunder expected to be preparing for another trip to the NBA Finals. Instead, they’re preparing for summer.

Following Oklahoma City’s Game 7 loss to the Spurs, MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made it clear he plans to leave roster decisions to executive vice president Sam Presti.

“I will give zero input,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I will let Sam Presti, the greatest GM ever, do his job.”

Meanwhile, Warriors forward Draymond Green came to Gilgeous-Alexander’s defense amid criticism of his playing style.

Green argued that complaints about foul calls often accompany greatness and suggested the Thunder star has reached another level of respect — and scrutiny — around the league.

Team Canada

Team Canada announced its 23-man player pool for this summer’s World Cup qualifiers, and Gilgeous-Alexander is among the headliners.

One notable absence is Nuggets guard Jamal Murray.

Canada general manager Rowan Barrett said Murray remains committed to representing the national program, but won’t participate this summer.

Andrew Wiggins and Shaedon Sharpe were also not included on the roster.

Canada opens qualifying play July 3 against Puerto Rico as it begins another push toward international competition.
