Charley Barkley gets emotional in discussing future of NBA

Charles Barkley has never been shy about criticizing the modern NBA.

That’s why his recent comments about Victor Wembanyama stood out.

Appearing on ESPN’s Get Up before Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Barkley admitted he became emotional watching Wembanyama after the Spurs advanced past Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals.

“The emotion that kid showed after Game 7, it almost brought tears to my eyes,” Barkley said.

For Barkley, it wasn’t simply about the victory. It was about what the moment revealed.

Wembanyama, already one of the league’s brightest stars at just 22 years old, was visibly emotional after reaching the NBA Finals. While some observers questioned the reaction, Barkley saw it differently.

He saw a player who genuinely cares.

“I watched the press conference, and he talked about how much winning meant to him,” Barkley said. “It made me so proud that that guy is gonna be the face of our league for the next 20 years.”

That’s high praise from one of basketball’s most recognizable voices.

The NBA has spent years hearing criticism about load management, tanking and questions surrounding player commitment during the regular season. Barkley believes Wembanyama represents something different.

The Spurs star has consistently embraced competition, pressure and expectations since entering the league. His passion during San Antonio’s playoff run only reinforced that image.

Whether Wembanyama ultimately becomes the next face of the NBA remains to be seen. But Barkley appears convinced.

And considering how often Barkley laments the direction of today’s game, that endorsement may carry more weight than most
