NBA mock drafts reveal several options for Cavs at No. 29

With the NBA Draft now less than two weeks away, the Cavaliers continue to be linked to a wide range of prospects in mock drafts around the basketball world.

As thoroughly detailed by Jackson Flickinger of Fear The Sword, recent projections have Cleveland targeting everything from an instant-offense guard to a stretch big man to a physical wing with upside.

The Cavs hold the No. 29 overall selection in the first round, scheduled for June 23, and there appears to be little consensus on which direction they may go.

Meleek Thomas, Arkansas

In his latest mock draft for The Athletic, Sam Vecenie has Cleveland selecting Arkansas guard Meleek Thomas.

Vecenie suggested the Cavs could look to add backcourt scoring if veteran guard Dennis Schroder is moved this offseason.

Thomas, 19, averaged 15.6 points while shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 41.6 percent on three-pointers during his lone season with the Razorbacks. He is viewed as a talented scorer capable of creating his own shot, though questions remain about his playmaking and decision-making.

As Flickinger pointed out, Thomas would address Cleveland’s need for bench scoring. But at 6-foot-3, he would also add another undersized guard to a roster already featuring several backcourt options.

Henri Veesaar, North Carolina

Meanwhile, Ricky O’Donnell of SB Nation has the Cavs selecting 7-footer Henri Veesaar.

A native of Estonia, Veesaar spent three seasons at Arizona before transferring to North Carolina, where he averaged 17.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 blocks.

O’Donnell highlighted Veesaar’s ability to stretch the floor, noting he connected on 42.6 percent of his three-point attempts this past season.

While Cleveland already features Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley in the frontcourt, Veesaar’s shooting ability could offer a different dimension off the bench and provide additional depth in the middle.

Koa Peat, Arizona

Yahoo Sports draft analyst Kevin O’Connor sees the Cavs taking Arizona forward Koa Peat.

O’Connor described Peat as a tough, physical player whose football pedigree shows up on the court. The 6-foot-9 freshman averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 52.8 percent from the field.

Though his perimeter game remains a work in progress, Peat’s size, strength and versatility could make him an intriguing developmental option late in the first round.

Hoops Wire projection

For what it’s worth, Hoops Wire’s latest mock draft has the Cavaliers selecting Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson.

“Cleveland adds a steady, team-first forward ready to contribute,” Yours Truly wrote.

Jefferson is viewed as a versatile forward who can defend multiple positions, move the ball and impact games without needing plays called for him — traits that could fit well alongside Cleveland’s established core.

As Flickinger noted in his roundup, there are reasonable arguments for all three prospects mentioned in national mock drafts. Whether the Cavs prioritize scoring, frontcourt depth, physicality or overall fit remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: With the draft approaching fast, speculation is only beginning.
