Victor Wembanyama: Spurs ‘know’ they can rally in NBA Finals

The Spurs are one loss away from seeing their season end, but don’t expect anyone inside their locker room to start waving the white flag.

After falling to the Knicks in heartbreaking fashion in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, San Antonio trails the series, 3-1, entering Game 5 at home. Despite the daunting odds, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama said the team’s confidence remains intact.

“Everybody (on the Spurs) thinks, everybody knows, we’re going to do it,” Wembanyama said, via Joe Vardon of The Athletic. “I feel like we need to isolate that one game and take it one game at a time. I think it would be a mistake to waste our energy on multiple games. It’s one game at a time.”

The Spurs have been competitive throughout the series, with each of their losses coming in closely contested games. That’s part of the reason they still believe a comeback is possible.

Wembanyama acknowledged that the grind of the Finals has presented challenges.

The increased minutes, heightened intensity and overall demands of the championship round have tested everyone involved. Still, he made it clear that he isn’t interested in using fatigue as an excuse.

Besides, the two-day break before Game 5 should help both teams recharge.

Veteran guard De’Aaron Fox echoed Wembanyama’s optimism.

“We still have this belief because we’ve seen it,” Fox said. “We’ve seen it be done, that teams have come back from 3-1. I think even with those series, the games that they lost, they were losing by double digits. The games that we’re losing have all been close games. We still have that belief that we have a chance to win.”

History is certainly working against San Antonio. Teams facing a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals rarely recover.

Then again, the Spurs aren’t focused on history. They’re focused on winning one game and forcing a Game 6.
