What LaMelo Ball trade means for Timberwolves

The Timberwolves didn’t just make a splash. They made a statement.

After back-to-back trips deep into the Western Conference playoffs and a second-round exit this year, Minnesota clearly decided it wasn’t close enough to seriously challenge the Thunder or Spurs. So president of basketball operations Tim Connelly did what he has rarely been afraid to do — he took another big swing.

This time, he landed All-Star guard LaMelo Ball.

The cost wasn’t insignificant. Naz Reid heads to Charlotte, along with a future first-round pick, three pick swaps and three second-rounders. But Minnesota wasn’t looking to simply maintain its place in the West.

It was looking to raise its ceiling.

Ball immediately addresses one of the Timberwolves’ biggest needs. While Anthony Edwards has developed into one of the NBA’s elite scorers, Minnesota has lacked a true playmaking point guard since Mike Conley began slowing down.

Ball changes that.

He averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists last season while appearing in 72 games, his healthiest campaign in several years. His ability to create offense for teammates should take pressure off Edwards and make life easier for everyone around him.

On paper, it’s an exciting fit.

Edwards remains one of the league’s most explosive finishers, while Ball is among its most creative passers. Put them together in the same backcourt, and defenses suddenly have far more to worry about.

There are legitimate questions, of course.

Minnesota gives up an important frontcourt piece in Reid, and replacing his scoring and versatility won’t be easy. Ball’s injury history also can’t be ignored, even after a healthier 2025-26 campaign.

The Timberwolves may not be finished dealing, either. They’ll still need to sort out their depth and frontcourt rotation before opening night.

But championship contenders rarely play it safe.

The Timberwolves looked at a loaded Western Conference and decided standing pat wasn’t enough. Whether this move ultimately works remains to be seen.

One thing is already clear, though: Minnesota is pushing all of its chips toward the middle of the table.
