The Spurs already have Victor Wembanyama. What if they added Devin Booker next?
Jonah Kubicek of FullCourtPressNews floated a hypothetical trade that would send Booker from the Suns to San Antonio in exchange for De’Aaron Fox and a massive package of future draft capital.
To be clear, this is a proposed deal, not one that has been reported as being discussed by the teams. Under the idea:
Spurs receive: Devin Booker
Suns receive: De’Aaron Fox, 2027 first-round pick via Atlanta, 2029 first-round pick, 2030 first-round pick swap and 2031 first-round pick
That is obviously a serious price. But the case for San Antonio is pretty straightforward.
Booker would give the Spurs an elite perimeter scorer who wouldn’t need to dominate the ball nearly as much as Fox. That could make it easier to expand the roles of young guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper while keeping Wembanyama at the center of everything.
Booker averaged 26.1 points and 6.0 assists last season and is still under 30.
Kubicek argues that a lineup featuring Harper, Castle, Booker and Wembanyama would immediately give San Antonio one of the most talented cores in basketball.
Phoenix’s motivation would be different. The Suns would be turning Booker into another established guard while replenishing a depleted collection of future draft assets.
There are obvious questions. Booker is owed more than Fox, the Spurs would be giving up substantial draft capital, and there’s no indication Phoenix is actively trying to move its franchise star.
But as far as hypothetical blockbusters go, the basketball logic is easy enough to see. San Antonio gets a cleaner offensive fit next to Wembanyama.
Phoenix gets Fox and a mountain of picks. And the Spurs push even more chips into the middle.
