NBA trade proposal sends Kevin Durant to Cavs in three-team James Harden blockbuster

If the Cavaliers really wanted to shake up the Eastern Conference, well, this would certainly qualify.

A hypothetical three-team trade proposal making the rounds would send Kevin Durant to Cleveland while moving James Harden back to the Rockets in a deal that also includes the Pistons.

Yes, there’s a lot going on here.

The proposal, outlined by Sami Haider of The Sporting News, looks like this:

Cavaliers receive: Kevin Durant, Fred VanVleet, 2028 second-round pick from Detroit

Rockets receive: James Harden via sign-and-trade, Jarrett Allen, 2031 first-round pick

Pistons receive: Dennis Schroder

Again, this is an idea, not a reported trade discussion.

But from Cleveland’s standpoint, it’s certainly interesting.

The Cavs would essentially turn Harden and Allen into Durant and VanVleet, giving Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley another elite scorer while replacing Harden with an experienced point guard.

A Mitchell-VanVleet-Durant-Mobley core would have plenty of offensive firepower. It would also represent another massive swing by a Cleveland team that already changed directions last season by acquiring Harden for Darius Garland.

Houston, meanwhile, would reunite Harden with the franchise where he became an MVP while adding Allen and another first-round pick. Detroit’s role would be considerably simpler, with the Pistons acquiring Schroder (again) as veteran backcourt depth behind Cade Cunningham.

There would be plenty to untangle before anything resembling this could actually happen, beginning with Harden’s contract situation and all the usual salary-cap gymnastics.

That’s why nobody should confuse this with an actual rumor.

Still, after the Cavs missed on LeBron James and watched Philadelphia load up around him, the larger question is legitimate.

Namely, would Cleveland be willing to make another enormous move?

If Kevin Durant somehow became available, you’d certainly have to make the call.
