The Cavaliers are trading Dennis Schröder and cash to the Hornets for Tre Mann, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Friday.
According to Charania, Charlotte lands an established veteran point guard with ties to Hornets president Jeff Peterson and coach Charles Lee from Schroder’s early years in Atlanta. The Hornets, Cavs and Schroder’s agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, had been working on the deal for the past couple of months.
For Cleveland, this appears to be about considerably more than swapping guards.
The deal provides the Cavs with additional financial flexibility and tax savings, keeping them comfortably below the second apron while allowing them to continue pursuing other roster moves. Schroder is owed $14.8 million this season, while Mann will make $8 million, creating significant immediate savings for Cleveland.
That’s particularly notable given the Cavs’ ongoing pursuit of restricted free-agent wings Peyton Watson and Jonathan Kuminga. They had been exploring Schroder trades in an effort to create greater flexibility for another move.
Schröder’s Cleveland stay ends after barely six months. The Cavs acquired him from Sacramento at the February trade deadline.
Mann, meanwhile, gives Cleveland another guard while costing considerably less. More importantly, the Cavs may not be finished.
