The Raptors apparently have seen enough from Jamal Shead to know they’d like him to stick around.
Toronto and the third-year guard have agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract extension that will keep him under contract through the 2029-30 season, his agent KJ Smith told Shams Charania of ESPN.
Shead was entering the final season of the three-year deal he signed after Toronto acquired his draft rights from Sacramento in 2024.
The 24-year-old has established himself primarily through defense and playmaking, carving out a role in the Raptors’ backcourt despite being selected with the No. 45 overall pick. Now he has some security to go with it.
Shead appeared in 79 games as a rookie before taking on a larger role last season. He’s expected to remain part of Toronto’s guard rotation as the Raptors continue trying to build around Scottie Barnes and their young core.
The contract isn’t the type that will dominate an NBA news cycle, but that’s sort of the point.
Three years and $24 million is manageable money for Toronto, while Shead gets rewarded without having to enter restricted free agency next summer.
Sometimes an extension doesn’t require much drama. The Raptors found a useful player in the middle of the second round. They’re keeping him.
