NBA Notes: Heat, Pelle Larsson, Pistons, Isaiah Joe, Thunder

Heat

Pelle Larsson got a four-year extension last month. Getting through training camp healthy has been a little more difficult.

The third-year wing has been dealing with an illness and persistent headaches, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. He tried playing against Minnesota on Saturday but left early because he still felt sick.

Larsson believes he caught something during Miami’s trip to Quebec City for its preseason opener or on the way home. His first attempt to return didn’t help.

“I didn’t respect it, maybe, and tried to tough it out,” Larsson said. “And now, just taking it slower.”

Tuesday was the first day since his symptoms began that he woke up without a headache. He did limited practice work, with his availability for Wednesday’s game against Brooklyn still uncertain.

“I’ll be taking it slow right now and just increasing the load, slow,” he said.

After one comeback attempt ended early, Larsson is giving himself more time to recover.

Pistons

Isaiah Joe brings shooting to Detroit. He also brings some experience with what the Pistons are trying to accomplish.

Acquired from Oklahoma City this offseason, Joe has already been part of a championship team. He hopes to help his new teammates understand the work that comes before a playoff run.

“For me personally, I can bring the experience of knowing what it takes to build throughout the regular season so that you can be successful in the postseason,” Joe told Coty Davis of The Detroit News.

Joe said he’s found a group with shared goals and no egos. He also likes its work habits.

“These guys are grimy. They work hard and are in the gym every night, working on their craft,” he said. “We have a great system and great coaches. Everyone is together.”

Detroit holds an $11.3 million option on Joe for 2027-28, with a decision due next summer unless an extension comes first. There’s time for that. Right now, Joe sounds comfortable with the basketball part of his new arrangement.

Thunder

The Thunder’s preseason win over Indiana came with a concerning scene involving rookie guard Otega Oweh.

Oweh went down with a non-contact injury during overtime Tuesday and couldn’t put weight on his right foot as he was helped to the locker room, according to Justin Martinez of The Oklahoman. He was also seen grabbing at the back of his leg.

There was no confirmed diagnosis in the report, but teammate Brooks Barnhizer offered support afterward.

“Any time you see somebody get hurt, whatever it may be, it’s never good. But with the kind of kid Otega is, regardless of what it is, he’s going to be OK,” Barnhizer said.

Oweh, the No. 41 pick acquired from Miami in a draft-night trade, signed a two-way contract in July. He averaged 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists during his final season at Kentucky.

He had already dealt with a left ankle injury that limited him to two Summer League appearances. Now Oklahoma City awaits more information on another setback before his first regular season.
