Caleb Houstan’s next opportunity will come with the Trail Blazers, though the plan is for him to land with their G League affiliate.
Portland is signing the veteran forward to an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Joe Freeman of The Oregonian. Houstan is expected to eventually join the Rip City Remix.
The Blazers have three openings on their preseason roster, so no corresponding move is required.
Houstan spent camp with New Orleans before being waived earlier this week. The 32nd pick in the 2022 draft, he played three seasons for Orlando and one for Atlanta, appearing in 186 regular-season games.
His most useful NBA skill has been his outside shooting. Houstan has made 37.8 percent of his career 3-point attempts, averaging 3.9 points and 1.4 rebounds in 13.4 minutes.
With four seasons of NBA service, he’s no longer eligible for a two-way contract. His Exhibit 10 deal does allow for a bonus of up to $91,000 if he’s waived and then spends at least 60 days with the Remix.
For Houstan, the G League offers a chance to play more consistent minutes and make a case for another NBA look. Portland could use additional options at forward behind Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara.
There’s no guaranteed path back, but shooting tends to get teams’ attention. Houstan has that part of the résumé.
