Grizzlies pick up options on Zach Edey, Cedric Coward

The Grizzlies have exercised their 2027-28 team options on Zach Edey and Cedric Coward, the team announced Tuesday.

Edey’s fourth-year option is worth approximately $8.07 million, while Coward’s third-year option comes in at $6.29 million. The moves keep two young starters in Memphis’ plans beyond this season.

For Edey, the next step is staying on the court. Two surgeries on his left ankle limited him to 11 games last season, interrupting what had been a productive stretch for the 7-foot-3 center.

Edey averaged 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 25.8 minutes during those appearances. His first procedure came in June 2025, followed by another in March to address persistent discomfort and bone stress.

Despite the lengthy absence, Memphis is continuing to invest in his development. Edey will become eligible for a rookie extension next July and could reach restricted free agency in 2028 if the sides don’t agree to a new deal.

Coward, meanwhile, gave the Grizzlies plenty to like in his first season. The 23-year-old wing earned All-Rookie first-team honors after averaging 13.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 62 games, including 47 starts.

Memphis traded up to select Coward at No. 11 in the 2025 draft. He shot 47.1% from the field, 33.8% from three-point range and 84.3% at the foul line as a rookie.

The Grizzlies have until November 1, 2027, to decide on his $8.34 million fourth-year option for 2028-29.

Memphis also entered camp with an option decision looming on Walter Clayton Jr., but waived the guard earlier this week.
