Otega Oweh’s first NBA season ended before it could begin. Now the Thunder have waived him to make room for another young wing.
Oklahoma City announced the move Saturday, opening a two-way spot after agreeing to terms with Micah Peavy.
Oweh, 23, ruptured his right Achilles tendon during an October 12 preseason victory over the Pacers. He underwent season-ending surgery two days later.
That’s a rough introduction to the NBA for a player the Thunder selected No. 41 overall in June. Oweh arrived from Kentucky, where he earned second-team All-SEC honors and gave the Wildcats plenty of production in his final college season.
The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals in 36 games as a senior. He also delivered one of the NCAA Tournament’s memorable buzzer-beaters.

Peavy gets the opening after his own brief stay with the Grizzlies. A second-round pick in 2025, he spent his rookie season with the Pelicans before being traded to Memphis in September and waived Monday.
The Thunder will get a look at whether Peavy can contribute while continuing his development on a two-way deal. Oweh’s immediate focus is considerably different, with a lengthy rehabilitation ahead before he can resume pursuing his NBA career.
