Sixers Announce Contract Extension For Joel Embiid

The 76ers have signed All-Star center Joel Embiid to a contract extension, the team announced in a press release.

“Joel is the definition of elite — a role model in our community and a true MVP-caliber superstar on the court,” Sixers managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement. “Since he was drafted in 2014, his rare blend of skills, charisma and leadership has transformed this franchise. We couldn’t be more grateful and excited to continue watching him in a 76ers uniform.” 

Embiid received a four-year, supermax extension worth $196 million that runs through the 2026-27 season, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. He still has two years and $65.2 million remaining on his current deal.

Embiid, 27, became eligible for the supermax extension when he was named second team All-NBA after the season. Per Shelburne, his new contract will be fully guaranteed without any sort of protection related to injuries.

A three-time All-Star, Embiid averaged 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 blocks, shooting 51 percent from the field. The 76ers finished with the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, bowing out of the playoffs in the second round, where the lost to the Hawks in seven games.

“Since the 2017-18 season, Embiid has avoided the kind of injuries that stalled the beginning of his career,” Shelburne wrote. “The longest stretch of games that Embiid missed in one season was the 11 games he missed this past spring with a bone bruise in his left knee.”

The Sixers originally selected Embiid with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
